Nancy is interested in the way people connect and communicate with each other. This helps to direct the work towards being group focussed and allows the group to take control of their own work as co-editors, allowing her to work as a facilitator. She enjoys the challenge of generating team spirit and energising a group through creative activity. Her ethos focuses on encouraging others to gain personal creative growth from their work, and allowing them to value their artistic achievements and the achievements of others.
Workshops - Nancy can provide a wide range of art workshops working with multimedia. The workshops can be specific or can explore a combination of practices over a course of weeks. Each workshop is individually planned to cater for the age, ability and learning objectives within the group and each member's unique style of visual experience is embraced.
Past projects include:
1. Using plays by the playwright Brian Friel to engage with a group of women. This project included a trip to St. Michael's Theatre to see Dancing at Lughnasa. The women could identify with the characters and experiences of times past, this encouraged the flow of conversation and memory. This project offered an introduction to drama/theatre production and therapeutic conversation regarding times past.
2. Folklore and oral history project. The aim of this project was to preserve a record of the rich traditions of local women’s everyday lives and to capture and preserve their stories which would otherwise be lost and forgotten. The group focus explored their memories and stories in recorded conversation.
3. Getting to know your community/environment saw a group of children celebrate their community through art. This project took the children out into their community and collected objects which were used to create masterpieces. The aim was to instil in the children a sense of self and a sense of belonging.
4. Summer Fun – A collection of children’s art workshops which included painting, collage, printing, clay, plaster and using recycled objects to make art.
She is currently working on the Internship Strand of Wexford County Councils Living Arts Project, a visual arts educational scheme where I work with classes from 2nd to 6th using different mediums.
Background - Nancy completed a BA (Hons) in Art in May 2014 at the Wexford Campus School of Art & Design, IT Carlow, receiving a First Class Honours. Social history, photography, video, text, sound, and narrative inform my work. With a passion for participatory and community based art, her practice uses multimedia and explores the relationship between art and people. Her aim is to promote arts based community development (ABCD) through collective action and empowerment and to provide all sections of society the opportunity to develop as individuals. At its core lies valuable participant engagement leading to closer social integration.
She has trained in Special Education and Adult Literacy and has five years’ experience working with children with Special Needs. She also has experience working with Traveller children, adults with literacy difficulties, women’s groups, young offenders and substance misusers. Her strong interest in identity and the narrative form an important role in her participatory projects. She has good project management skills and possesses strong skills when directing discussion to develop depth of reflection.
