The Forgotten
This work commemorates forgotten women. Their existence was removed by a society who deemed them as fallen and not worthy.
Rochford-Flynn's aim is to capture the lost lives of the ‘penitents’ of Ireland's Magdalene Laundries. The Sisters of the Good Shepherd Convent in New Ross, Co. Wexford is the focus behind this work. Magdalene laundries epitomised a culture of whisper and secrecy where girls were placed in institutions void of even their basic human rights. This calculated removal of self, where the penitent is deemed to have sinned is the greatest act of punishment possible to inflict on another human being. This work explores the shame and guilt which these women suffered and which ultimately led to the loss of their identities. A life endured hidden in a laundry and a mass grave left unmarked until in recent years a headstone was erected naming the women who died at the Laundry at New Ross, finally giving them recognition. |
