The Irish State Whitewash
Mixed Media
Sizes 297 x 420 mm
This work takes its inspiration from the physical spaces of the Magdalene Laundries, spaces which are being destroyed, demolished or reconstructed to make way for new developments. The Irish State is covering up old histories which have yet to be properly resolved and replacing them with new histories. Generations of women who were subjected to incarceration in these laundries are passing, and their experiences and testimonies are passing with them. Very little has been properly documented and most of the experiences/narratives which Rochford-Flynn has encountered are at a local level.
